Your thoughts on 3D please

Last few months were very busy for me, but I did do some stuff that might proof usefull to the further development of TRAX: I have done some other projects involving 3D coding for the web and I've learned 3D modelling using Blender.

This made me reconsidder adding a 3D mode to TRAX and I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Some requirements I drew up myself are:
- 3D mode should not just be a view-only, but also allow full edit features.
- I want it to look nice and stylized, not blocky. I was thinking about a cell shaded style (Like the borderland games)
- It should be especially useful for the height and terrain creation tools.
- It should be very intuitive switching between 2D and 3D.
- Later on, it should be the basis for the TRAX railroad game.
- it should perform smooth on any modern device

What do you think? Should I spend time on this? Or should I first do the DCC control suite I promissed?

Do you see the 3D version to be similar to SketchUp.app ? In the pro version one can create video files as they move through their landscapes and buildings. If the DCC control suite takes less time I would suggest you work on that and then the 3D mode. Either way your work on this site is nice, thank you!

Thanks,

I am currently mostly focused on DCC indeed...

I know, this is an old post, but an interesting one. It will probably be a huge step to go "3D", but it will also be a huge benefit for users.
Being a Blenderhead myself, I know the power of the program and the complexity.
If you consider to add a 3D mode, I would like to suggest to also add support for importing community created 3D add-on models (modding - which will need some error handling, I guess) and an easy way to get those into the app (e.g. importing a zip-file with a defined directory structure inside and maybe an xml or json textfile with meta-info, definitions for additions like textures or attachments points and compatible loads or industries).
This way you might also get to a point to add car routing and relating loads, cars and industry spurs to each other at any later time.
However, DCC control sounds great. Any thoughts going in the direction of "DCC++"? Please keep up the good work.
Thank you!

PS: Please use the English text, the German translation is a bit tricky.

Thanks for your thoughts... I think allowing users to import models is a great suggestion.

Currently I do not have a lot of time for development, but I am experimenting with WebGL and 3D. I have also done some testing with DCC control and that too looks like a promising direction to head into.
